Journal Article Summary

The article I chose looked at the relationship between vaginal Candida colonization in women and type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The research article is called Prevalence and Risk Factors for Vaginal Candida Colonization in Women with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. The study surveyed 101 female participants with diabetes from either an urban or suburban diabetes clinic to examine the relationship between vaginal Candida colonization, diabetes type and duration, and HbA1c level. The study found that type 1 diabetics were 3 times more likely as type 2 diabetes to be colonized with any Candida species. It also found that the species Candida albicans was more common in type 1 diabetes while Candida glabrata was more commonly isolated in type 2 diabetics. Factors that were associated with increased risk were older age, abnormal HbA1c level, oral antibiotic use in the previous 2 weeks, performing oral sex in the past 2 weeks, and history of chlamydia infection.
